480 GTX Glitching

Dunno if anyone's still browsing through here but I have a weird graphics problem that I can't seem to solve. I think it may have to do with overheating but it happens so sporadicly and only when I run anything 3D.

Yep, classic overheating effect.

I figured as much. The auto fan control on the 480 doesn't seem to kick in the middle of gaming and even at idle tempature, when I go to shut down the system and open her up for repair work, the 480's too hot to touch.

Yep. Still riding more miles each year than driving. I've stopped using bikejournal for my log since I'm now using a Garmin power meter head, so I just upload all data automatically. No more typing like with bikejournal.

And here you go - I'm famous! Actually this is pretty cool. Here we are on a section of the Tour of California. So what? What's neat is that my riding pal, wearing the helmet cam, did all the programing for all the telemetry displayed on the overlay. The data comes from the power meter head units. That's not me at the beginning. Skip to about 5 minutes where I come into the frame. We're hammering pretty hard - just watch us drop the JQP's. So he's working on licensing the software and I'm in the 'demo.'

Ran across this regarding the heat:

However, our biggest complaint with the GeForce GTX 480 isn’t the lack of a 2X performance improvement over the prior generation, instead it’s the enormous amount of heat the board generates. Under load the board gets scorching hot, you definitely wouldn’t want to make the mistake of touching the 480’s exposed heatpipes after an extended gaming session. GPU temps were typically in the 90 degree range – that’s more than 10 degrees higher than where we’d like them to be ideally.

As a result, this ends up creating an enormous hotspot in your chassis that you’re going to have to deal with. You’ll definitely want to pick up a case with a good side vent that can supply fresh, cool air from outside the chassis to the GPU

Geez...It looks like the big 240mm fan on the side panel of my case isn't doing much for airflow. Looks like I'll have to either look for a new case or retrofit the 480 for watercooling.

The issue may have to do with the GDDR5 chips since things go crazy at around 75C while the card was rated for slightly higher temps than that. Also when I was underclocking the 480 to around the 280 and 285 levels. I noticed that certain frequency ranges when undercloking the memory caused the system to reset.

Looks like I may have to save up some money and go for a 5870. I don't think the 5970 would fit in my system. I'm hesitant to go with ATI due to their support with OpenGL and older games that use OGL.
